i remember watching this on television in the late 70sa kid. This movie will always be how i remember brynner(well this and 10 commandments)> This is a great sci-fi flick and didnt know it was michael crichton's until now. Despite a cramped budget, "Westworld" looks pretty good and is well-cast, with Yul Brynner in particular giving a fabulous performance, a variation on his role in 1960's "The Magnificent Seven", a good in-joke. The plot, about a fantasy vacation resort for grown-ups that goes haywire, is just a set-up for the final two-thirds of the picture, a showdown. There's never much going on behind-the-scenes, only some fleeting details, and then writer-director Michael Crichton gets down to the real business on his agenda: staging lots of deaths (stabbings, shootings, etc.). This would all be more amusing (in a twisted sense) if Crichton had a fully-developed sense of playfulness, but some of the killings, particularly the stabbing in the King Arthur segment, are nasty and off-putting. It's hard to tell if Crichton is in on his own black joke, that if he understands how horrible-funny this is, why are the killings so ugly? (the violence gives the picture a depressing undermining). I liked "Westworld", I think it has stood the test of time, but it toys with the audience for so long and yet seldom gives us much relief. **1/2 from ****
Crichton the director seems to have had more fun with the film than Crichton the writer, whose screenplay can offer us no better explanation for the sudden, bloody robot rebellion than an epidemic of "central mechanism psychosis."
It could have been a prototype test for future models.<br/><br/>Or the scientist/mechanic could have been one of the machines that was self-aware and built the robotswas mentioned by the scientists.
